Isolate

A protein powder processed to contain 90% or more protein by weight, with most fat, lactose, and carbohydrates removed. The purest common form of protein powder.

Protein isolate is a form of protein powder that has been processed to remove most non-protein components — fat, lactose (in dairy-based proteins), carbohydrates, and other impurities. The result is a powder that is typically 90% or more protein by weight. Whey isolate is the most common type, but you'll also find casein isolate and plant protein isolates on the market.

Why It Matters

The higher protein concentration in isolates means you get more protein per calorie and per scoop. A typical whey isolate delivers 25 to 27 grams of protein per 30-gram scoop, with less than 1 gram each of fat and carbs. Compare that to a whey concentrate, which might deliver 20 to 24 grams of protein in the same scoop size, with 2 to 4 grams of fat. For people who are lactose intolerant or sensitive, whey isolate is often well-tolerated because the isolation process removes nearly all the lactose — usually less than 1% remains.

What to Look For

Check the nutrition label: divide the grams of protein per serving by the total serving size in grams. If that number is 0.90 or higher, it's a true isolate. Some brands use "isolate" in the product name but actually blend isolate with concentrate to reduce cost — the ingredient list will reveal this if concentrate appears before or alongside isolate. Also look at the fat and sugar content per serving; a genuine isolate should have very low amounts of both. Brands like Transparent Labs, Momentous, and Kaged are known for using pure isolate without fillers.

For GLP-1 Medication Users

Isolate is often the best choice for GLP-1 users dealing with nausea or digestive sensitivity. Because nearly all the fat and lactose have been removed, isolates are lighter on the stomach and less likely to trigger the GI discomfort that many GLP-1 users experience. The tradeoff is a slightly higher price per serving, but when keeping food down is the challenge, that premium is worth it.
